KBC and Gresham Storage Solutions Agree Multi-Year Deal for Enterprise DistribuTape; KBC Lowers Operating Costs and Improves Tape Library Utilization

11:37 in Finanzen, Banken & Versicherung von Andrea Ferda

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) August 13, 2009

Gresham today announced that KBC Bank, an existing customer, has deepened its relationship with Gresham and agreed to a multiple year site license for its Enterprise DistribuTape (EDT) product as part of a move on the bank’s part to a standardized backup environment. Reasons cited by KBC for extending its use of EDT include operational cost-savings, improved tape library utilization, greater resiliency and “green” benefits.

Operational Cost-Savings

KBC, a Gresham customer since 2003, has benefited greatly from its adoption of Gresham’s Clareti Enterprise DistribuTape (EDT) product. EDT has been the glue between KBC’s backup servers and its tape libraries. EDT has consistently allowed KBC to maximize the utilization of the tape drives that are installed in their libraries slowing the rate at which they would have otherwise needed to acquire new tape drives. EDT’s error handling capabilities have also decreased the number of backup failures, decreasing the amount of time required to administer the environment. “EDT has helped us streamline our backup environment” says Guy Haeck, General Manager ICT Infrastructure, KBC. He went on to say “by managing the connection between our servers and tape libraries, EDT gives us peace of mind in knowing that problems with our backups will be minimal and utilization of our drives will be high.”

Better Utilization and Greater Resiliency

“The advantage that EDT delivers to businesses is the ability to make better use of expensive tape assets. While other companies may claim to offer this through tape drive sharing, only by having a deep understanding of how the tape library works and being able to fully expose all of its features and functions can a truly optimized, highly resilient solution be created,” said Christopher S. Young, Executive Vice President, Gresham Storage Solutions. “We have spent years perfecting EDT to ensure it delivers optimal tape utilization and exceptional resiliency. KBC is an excellent example of a firm that understands the importance of taking advantage of EDT to ensure its backups run in the most efficient manner, at the lowest possible cost and with the greatest peace of mind.”

“Green” Benefits

KBC recognizes the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and tries to minimize its impact on the environment. KBC sees EDT as an enabling technology in this pursuit. “EDT lets us make more efficient use of existing tape assets. It saves us from having to buy new tape drives that mean we use less power and generate less heat,” said Peter Praet, Project Leader ICT Infrastructure, KBC. “EDT also lets us do more backups directly from multiple servers using LAN-Free and this saves us from having to have as much disk on hand to stage these backups. That saves power and heat too and to us, everything that we can do to minimize our impact on the environment is worthwhile.”

KBC is only one of numerous Global 2000 organizations that are benefiting from EDT and its ability to decrease operational costs, improve tape library utilization, insulate backups from errors and deliver indirect “green” benefits. EDT is available on Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems and supports SUN ACSLS, IBM 3494* and Quantum DAS/SDLC* controlled tape libraries in Tivoli Storage Manager backup environments. Gresham Storage Solutions also offers a virtualization product, Clareti Storage Director, that delivers similar benefits to EDT while improving overall backup performance. Clareti Storage Director is available for the iOS, HP NonStop, Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems and works with most backup applications.

Dangers of not Protecting Personal Data on USB Storage Devices

05:38 in Wikileaks & Co. von Willi Schunk

Article by Carl Jones

In today’s prolific information and technology era, your personal or private computerized data is the fodder which feeds an absolutely vast global interconnected information system as more and more companies and organizations are going paperless. Unfortunately few have actually thought about potential consequences of no longer having data physically accessible, but in the form of bits and bytes. A paperless society is convenient, but at what cost?

A very popular device for carrying around all those computer bits and bytes (1′s and 0′s) of data is called a USB Thumbnail Drive or Memory Stick.

What is an USB Thumbnail Drive?

Sometimes referred to as a USB Stick or Flash Drive
Used to carry, store or transfer data like, documents, photos, etc.
Data stored on USB devices are stored in memory on a computer chip
USB storage devices can hold from 8 Gigabytes of data to 50 Gigabytes – up

USB storage devices can hold a tremendous amount of data on a device you can fit in your palm and they are relatively in expensive. Think about this. If you own a USB thumbnail drive of only 32 Gigabytes this is equivalent to carrying around 32,000 novels in your pocket.

Thumbnail drives were once the sole domain of use for special operatives, spies, government agencies and large multi-billion dollar conglomerates – no more. Now anyone with about USD $ 30 can purchase the same type of device which will also hence be referred to in this article as a “USB spying gear drive”.

Ironically USB spying gear drives greatest strength, i.e., small size is also its greatest weakness. Yes, USB thumbnail drives are small and convenient for carrying large amounts of data; however by sheer nature of their size they can also be easily misplace, or stolen without notice – until you need your data.

How frustrating is it to lose your important or private information not knowing if it is floating around town, in a coffee caf

Direct Line Auto Insurance Achieves Cost-efficient Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery with DataCore SANsymphony-V Storage Hypervisor

00:43 in Verbraucherschutz von Andrea Ferda

Berlin and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (PRWEB) December 15, 2011

DataCore Software, the industrys premier provider of storage virtualization software, announced that a premier German insurance company Direct Line Versicherung AG has implemented its business continuity and disaster recovery architecture on a storage infrastructure built on the DataCore storage hypervisor SANsymphony-V foundation. The high-speed and highlyavailable synchronous mirroring functionality of the DataCore solution enables Direct Line to set up a backup and disaster recovery data center located 40 kilometers away in order to minimize downtime and to ensure speedy recovery in case of a failure at the primary data center. The combination of a storage hypervisor with server hypervisors provides a flexible, high-performance and fail safe IT infrastructure that virtualizes storage hardware with SANsymphony-V and server hardware with VMware vSphere.

“DataCore SANsymphony-V provides Direct Line a cost-effective and efficient business continuity solution supporting high-availability and disaster recovery across multiple sites, without neglecting performance or data protection aspects. The DataCore solution is a strategic component in our daily business, says Heiko Teichmann, managing director at IT service provider Teserco and project manager on behalf of Direct Line Versicherung.

According to a recent German consumer report Stiftung Warentest, the automobile insurance company Direct Line offers an excellent price-performance return to its customers. While many factors are involved, this can also be attributed to having a cost advantage in its IT infrastructure. In addition to meeting the disaster recovery requirements and flexibility of the central IT services, the storage hypervisor SANsymphony-V provides greater potential for additional cost savings. Thanks to its hardware independence and the efficient caching algorithms of the DataCore solution, Direct Line can not only use its installed and cost-effective HP P2000 disk subsystems but with DataCore also remove the functional or performance limitations that would have prevented them from future use. Today, around 75 terabytes of data are now managed in the main data center, located in Teltow, and at the remote data center in Berlin, which meets the requirements set by the highest data protection category (Tier 4). The synchronized, mirrored data is transported over a 6 Gb dark fiber connection between the two sites.

In addition to adding a new level of data protection and reliability, Direct Line benefits from an increased efficiency in productivity and flexibility during the year-end, peak business season, which adds an increased spike in business volume and much higher IT-workloads. The ability to work as an active-active operation across both data centers is made possible by SANsymphony-Vs ability to stretch the shared storage across the two sites. This allows the insurance company to move virtual machines and storage resources across different locations on-the-fly and with little effort.
