Planet Optical Disc Ltd. FZE, the Middle East region’s premier Digital Media Manufacturing facility located in Dubai Airport Free Zone (DAFZA) has announced that it is launching a CD-R and DVDR manufacturing facility in Dubai at GITEX 2004. The company is one of four prominent technology companies co-participating at the show under the DAFZA umbrella.

At GITEX, Planet Optical Disc will showcase its new Premium Grade 52X CD-R with 700 MB capacity and DVDR with 4.7 GB capacity in Disc Vision brand, as well as new high density DVD formats. The company has projected that it is set to achieve a 100 million disc milestone in its production capacity by the end of 2004.

Planet Optical Disc renders turnkey services of Glass Mastering, Replication, Printing on disc surface such as CD-R, DVDR, DVD Video, DVD-ROM, CD-ROM, CD Audio and Enhanced CD at its state-of-the-art manufacturing base in DAFZA. The company also offers specialized DVD Encoding and Authoring services.

Subhash Dudani, Chairman of Planet Optical Disc Ltd. FZE stated, “We chose to set up operations in DAFZA with a 55,000 square feet area, keeping future expansion in mind. In terms of logistics, this was the ideal location for such a plant as the intention was to serve the entire Middle East market and the Asian sub-continent. We are now at the forefront of CD-R, DVDR, DVD Video, CD-Rom Replication, Glass Mastering and allied turnkey services in the region. DAFZA’s strategic location and logistics services have offered us the impetus to cater to the region’s growing needs effectively and we look forward to further growth”.

Commenting on Planet Optical’s participation at the show, Shahla Abdul Razak, Sales and Marketing Director, DAFZA said, “Planet Optical is one of our highly valued customers and their disc manufacturing activity adds tremendous value to the Free Zone. Blu-ray Players are manufactured to only play certain authorized discs for a specific geographical region. It is comparable to that of region codes for DVD, but instead of using numbers, Blu-ray uses letters A, B and C to differentiate between regions. You can usually tell what region your Blu-ray DVD Player is by viewing the bottom of the player or in the owners manual. The three different regions are as follows:

Region A – This region encompasses almost all of North, Central and South America, as well as Southeast Asian countries, including Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.

Region B – This region consists of most European, African and southwest Asian countries, as well as New Zealand and Australia.

Region C – This region is for the remaining central and south Asian countries, including Russia and the People’s Republic of China.

In particle terms, this means if you have a Blu-ray Movie Disc that is Region Code A, you will must have a Region A player to view the movie. The reason behind region codes is to allow the movie providers, the producers or motion picture studios, to regulate different content, release dates, prices and so forth for every region. However, while players are bound to support regional coding, content providers are not. There is even a current trend by movie studios to produce region free Blu-ray Discs so it can be played on any player, regardless of their Region Code.

Movie studios such as Universal and Paramount Pictures released their motion pictures as region free. Sony and Warner Bros. have also released most of their films region free. Walt Disney and Lionsgate tend to have a mixture of region free and region coded film releases. While Blu-ray Movies from MGM and Twentieth Century are almost always released with region codes.

Region Free Blu-ray Discs seem great but you do have to be aware of certain issues. Most discs have standard resolution extra features. Things like director interviews, deleted or extra scenes and trailers. These extra features may be in NTSC or PAL. So if you are located in a PAL based region, you may not be able to access any NTSC recorded features on the disc. Subtitles in your language is another thing to look for.

Multiregion Blu-ray Players

Multiregion players are capable of playing all 3 regions, A, B, and C. These players do not require a PAL-NSTC TV to watch discs. Any standard TV that has HDMI inputs, can display the movies without the need of a converter.
